President al-Assad holds talks with Ukrainian Chairman of the Supreme Council and Prime Minister

Kiev, (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad on Friday held talks with Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn at the Council headquarters during which they discussed parliamentary cooperation between Syria and Ukraine and means for restoring their historic warmth to serve the mutual interests of the two countries' peoples.

Talks also stressed the importance of activating the Syrian-Ukrainian Friendship Association and joint parliamentary committees and exchanging visits between officials.

Lytvyn said that his country is very keen on its relations with Syria due to its leading role in the Arab and Islamic world, affirming that President al-Assad's visit will revive the historic relations between the two countries in all fields.

For his part, President al-Assad lauded the clear and balanced visions of Ukraine's policy.

The two sides agreed upon the need to speed up the ratification of agreements signed between the two countries and implement them to benefit the two friendly countries.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Finance Dr. Mohammad al-Hussein, Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, Assistant Foreign Minister Abdul Fattah Ammoura and the Director of Europe Department at the Foreign Ministry.

President al-Assad also held talks with Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov at the Ukrainian Cabinet headquarters. The talks focused on economic cooperation, particularly in the fields of petroleum, electricity, marine transport, construction, advanced technology, renewable energy and boosting trade exchange which has been witnessing considerable growth recently.

President al-Assad underlined the importance of the free trade agreement which will be signed by Syria and Ukraine and the two countries' efforts to joint the three-way customs union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

President al-Assad and Azarov also discussed the possibility of singing several agreements between the two countries and the importance of following up on the execution of signed agreements, in addition to the need to benefit from the resources available to both sides to expand cooperation fields.

They also stressed the importance of activating the Syrian-Ukrainian Joint Committee and encouraging businessmen to explore investment opportunities in each country, mainly through working to cancel entry visas between the Syria and Ukraine.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Finance Dr. Mohammad al-Hussein, Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, Assistant Foreign Minister Abdul Fattah Ammoura, the Director of Europe Department at the Foreign Ministry and the Syrian charge d'affaires in Kiev.

President al-Assad Visits Tomb of Unknown Soldier in Kiev

President Bashar al-Assad on Friday morning visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Kiev and laid a wreath on the memorial.

Then, Guards of Honor saluted President al-Assad while the Syrian and Ukrainian national anthems were played.

President al-Assad also visited the memorial of Famine Victims in Kiev and lit a candle on the memorial.
