'You won't need to abolish us – we won’t be around for it’: Why I and many of my colleagues are quitting as US police officers

Travis Yates is a serving police commander in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is a doctoral student in Strategic Leadership, a graduate of the FBI National Academy, and the author of "The Courageous Police Leader: A Survival Guide for Combating Cowards, Chaos & Lies”. This article was first published on lawofficer.com

After more than 27 years in the force, I’ve had enough. These protests and riots are the final straw. The nasty words we get called all the time have now turned into rocks, bottles and gunfire. It’s over, America: we are leaving.

This is the hardest thing I have written.

I grew up in a law enforcement family. My father worked his way up to the rank of Captain at the Fort Smith, Arkansas, Police Department. As a kid I remember going with him on Friday to pick up his check and I was in awe of these super heroes he worked around.

My dad sacrificed a lot and so did my late mother. Whether it was the week-long surveillance or wiretap or chasing drug runners across the country, he gave it all for my family and worked plenty of extra details to never let our family be without. Some would call that privilege but where I grew up, it was called hard work.

The kids at school thought it was cool what my dad did and while he sometimes asked me if anyone gave me a hard time, they never did. There was respect among all… even the kids in shop class.

I didn’t grow up wanting to be a cop but one fateful night, as a freshman in college, that all changed.

I went on a ride along and my life’s journey would never be the same.

After four years of college my dad wanted me at an agency that respected that education so I moved to Tulsa (Oklahoma) at 21 years old and never looked back.

I didn’t know anyone and all I knew was what I saw my dad do, work hard and treat people with respect. I saw a lot of other cops working hard as well and doing all they could to keep the community safe.

27 years has passed and if you would have told me the condition of law enforcement today, I would have never believed you.

It’s not that law enforcement has changed for the worse but everything around it has.

The mentally ill used to get treatment and now they just send cops. Kids used to be taught respect and now it’s cool to be disrespectful.

Supervisors used to back you when you were right but now they accuse you of being wrong in order to appease crazy people.

Parents used to get mad at their kids for getting arrested and now they get mad at us.

The media used to highlight the positive contribution our profession gave to society and now they either ignore it or twist the truth for controversy to line their own pockets.

There used to be a common respect among criminals. If they got caught, they understood you had a job to do but now it’s our fault they sit in handcuffs rather than their own personal decisions.

If someone attacked a cop, they were seen as such. Now we martyr them and sue for millions.

We used to be able to testify in court and we were believed. Now, unless there is video from three different angles, no one cares what you have to say.

With all this talk about racism and racist cops, I’ve never seen people treated differently because of their race. And while I know that cowards that have never done this job will call me racist for saying it, all I’ve ever seen was criminal behavior and cops trying to stop it and they didn’t give a rip what their skin color was.

I’ve seen cops help and save any type of race, gender or ethnicity you can think of and while that used to mean something, no one cares anymore.

I’ve been called every name you can think of and many of them with racial overtones and it’s never come from cops. I’ve watched African American cops take the brunt of this and even talked one rookie out of quitting after he was berated by a lot of cowards that had the same skin color as him.

I’ve heard words I never heard before being a cop.

Uncle Tom, Cracker, Pig and the N Word just to name a few. I’ve heard them thousands of times and never once did I see a police officer retaliate.

They just took it.

Despite that, it’s been the greatest opportunity of my life to do this job. I would have recommended it to anyone and I secretly hoped one of my kids would do it one day.

They would have been a 4th Generation Cop.

But today, all of that is over. I wouldn’t wish this job on my worst enemy. I would never send anyone I cared about into the hell that this profession has become.

It’s the only job you can do everything right and lose everything.

It’s the only job where the same citizens you risk your life for hate you for it.

It’s the only segment left in society where it’s cool to discriminate and judge, just because of the uniform you wear.

You never get to explain.

You can never reason with them.

The nasty words have now turned into rocks and bottles and gunfire.

I’ve watched it happen to those around me and I have seen the total destruction of their life.

This job is a walking time bomb and you could get cancelled or prosecuted on the very next call, even if you do everything right.

No profession has to deal with that.

Doctors kill 250,000 people a year. They call them “medical mistakes” because society understands that they do a very difficult job under high stress and they must make the best possible decision in the moment.

Law enforcement is tasked with the same and we are highly successful. Despite the most violent society we have ever seen, less than 1,000 suspects are killed a year. 96% are attacking us with weapons and all but a few others are attacking us with their cars or their fists and more and more with simulated guns so Benjamin Crump (an American civil rights attorney) can help their family win the lottery.

I’ve seen cops risk their own lives when they shouldn’t have… just to keep from taking one.

They never get the credit that other professions get.

Cowards are all around us. From chiefs to sheriffs to politicians, no one has our back.

Now, the little we have, we are told they are going to defund us or even abolish us. Citizens with a political agenda will reign over us and all you have to do is wake up and put on a uniform to be a racist.

This weekend I received death threats for just doing my job. It would have been outrageous a decade ago and made national news.

Now, it’s just a Monday.

There will be more threats, more accusations of racism and more lies told about us.

I used to talk cops out of leaving the job. Now I’m encouraging them.

It’s over America. You finally did it.

You aren’t going to have to abolish the police, we won’t be around for it.

And while I know most Americans still appreciate us, it’s not enough and the risk is too high.

Those of you that say thank you or buy the occasional meal, it means everything.

But those of you that were silent while the slow turning of the knives in our backs happened by thugs and cowards, this is on you.

Your belief in hashtags and memes over the truth has and will create an environment in your community that you will never expect.

If you think Minneapolis will never turn into Mogadishu – it’s coming.

And when it does, remember what your complicity did.

This is the America that you made.

Food Waste Not, Want Not in the GCC
Cultural tendencies often lead to large amounts of food going unused but this is slowly changing
By TARA KAVALER/THE MEDIA LINE

The recently released report by Ernst & Young and HSBC titled “Food for the Future” says that Saudi Arabia wastes an estimated 427 kilograms per person per year, in contrast to Europe and North America, which discard between 95 and 115 kg on average per person annually.

Saudi Arabia is not alone; food waste is particularly problematic in Gulf countries.

In the United Arab Emirates, for example, food waste has been estimated at 197 kg per person annually.

“Many studies show that the GCC [Gulf Cooperation Council] countries are global leaders in food waste,” Dr. Tarek Ben Hassen, assistant professor of policy, planning and development at Qatar University, told The Media Line. Ben Hassen is co-author with Hamid El Bilali of the recently published systematic review, “Food Waste in the Countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.” Bilali and Ben Hassen quote a variety of studies showing a wide range of estimates of food waste in the GCC. One shows Saudi Arabians wasting between 165 and 511 kg of food per capita annually. Another says that in Qatar, per capita food waste amounts to 584 to 657 kg per year.

ICC Prosecutor: Israel war crimes probe can go on despite Oslo Accords
The ICC chief prosecutor's statement came in response to a May 27 request from the ICC Pretrial Chamber to clarify the status of the Oslo Accords and their impact on the war crimes probe.

International Criminal Court Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has told the ICC’s Pretrial Chamber that a war crimes probe against Israelis can proceed despite the continued application of the Oslo Accords.

Israel and its allies have claimed that the Oslo Accords prevent the PA from seeking ICC involvement in a potential criminal issue and from seeking statehood absent a deal between the parties. Bensouda’s decision on Monday was a rejection of Israel’s legal argument.

Bensouda further expressed concern about the impact of annexation on the combustible Israeli-Palestinian conflict and said that any annexation by Israel of any part of the West Bank would not have legal validity.

The ICC chief prosecutor’s statement came in response to a May 27 request from the ICC Pretrial Chamber to clarify the status of the Oslo Accords and their impact on a war crimes probe against Israel.

The ICC asked the Palestinian Authority to declare whether the Oslo Accords are still legally binding. The request came after PA President Mahmoud Abbas declared on May 19 that the PA no longer viewed itself as bound by the Oslo Accords due to Israel’s intention to annex parts of the West Bank.

Responding to this question, the PA said that Abbas’s May 19 declaration was not part of the legal record of the war crimes case regarding Israel.

The PA explained that its position was that the ICC could probe Israelis for war crimes even if the Oslo Accords were still in effect – clearly implying that the PA has not abandoned the Oslo process on a formal legal level despite pronouncements claiming the opposite. It added that if Israel annexed the West Bank, however, this would officially cancel the Oslo Accords.

Now that Bensouda has replied, it remains to be seen if Israel will respond, and if it does, what position it will take.

Israel has until June 24 to reply, but may also choose not to so as not to give recognition to the ICC’s investigation.

Overall, the answers which the parties give could have implications for whether a war crimes case is brought against Israelis over the 2014 Gaza War, the settlement enterprise and the 2018-2019 Gaza border conflict.

In a brief filed by the Czech Republic supporting Israel, the argument was that the Oslo Accords give Israel exclusive jurisdiction over criminal issues in the West Bank relating to Israel, proving that there is no “State of Palestine” to send a case to the ICC.

Only a state can usually refer a case to the ICC.

Responding to these arguments, Bensouda, who supports opening a full war crimes probe of Israel and Hamas, has said that: “State practice demonstrates that Oslo provisions derogating from the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination do not apply.”

In other words, Bensouda – and the PA for that matter – had previously argued that even if the Oslo Accords were not nullified, the ICC can move forward with the war crimes case.

But it is a dicey and vague area of law and a potential winning argument for Israel which could knock the war crimes case out before it even comes to interrogations let alone indictments.

In contrast, if the Oslo Accords do not apply, the PA can say that Israel has lost one of its best defenses to ICC involvement.

There are many other potential Israeli defenses, but the Oslo Accords have always been held up as the most important because the PA voluntarily entered the deal in the 1990s – long after the Six Day War.

The Foreign Ministry has kept quiet on the issue to date.

Bensouda announced her intent to move forward against Israel and Hamas on December 20, but requested an endorsement from the ICC Pretrial Chamber. Even before this latest development, it was unclear when the ICC would issue its ruling.

Annexation now, perhaps peace later
Opinion: Even if Israel only controls 30% of the West Bank, it is a message to the world - both allies and enemies - that the Jewish state is here to stay and it will no longer evacuate legal settlements and those who lawfully live in them

Prepare, because the moment of truth is nigh. The IDF will need to prepare to answer the threats coming from Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. Those two fronts are becoming too heated to cool down on their own.

Hezbollah and Hamas have gathered their strength and each is prepared to escalate their own 20-year war of attrition against Israel.

In order to prevent such an escalation from spreading to the Syrian border and the West Bank, Israel must be the first to strike and formulate a precise strategy for future operations.

The terrorist nations on the northern and southwestern borders of Israel know that they are on the cusp of a historic moment.

The shadow governments of Hezbollah and Hamas have already come to the conclusion that either they tire Israel out and force concessions that will weaken it or Jerusalem will force a reality that doesn't match their visions.

The annexation of territories in the West Bank is the building block of this reality. Israel will hold only 30% of the region, but the sheer act of application of sovereignty is a message that we are here to stay and a message to surrounding nations that their illusions of kicking us out are gone.

We will no longer evacuate legal settlements and those who lawfully live in them.

In the Middle East, when strength doesn't decide, there cannot be an agreement beneficial for all sides.

When there isn't a single and clear winner, every side thinks it deserves more than it should get, therefore there will always be a reason to not sign or adhere to agreements.

U.S. President Donald Trump's peace plan is both beneficial and harmful to a certain degree for both sides.

This unfortunately increases the probability that it won't become a reality without a unilateral, decisive decision. Only a determination and willingness to show national and military strength will create a normative daily routine for both Israel and the Palestinians.

Control over the Jordan Valley and Area C of the West Bank are the justified basis for a peace plan.

It's not annexation, but merely an expansion of existing settlements. We have no need to control hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, but to protect Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and be prepared to answer any threat to us.

It is only right and beneficial for the Palestinians to focus on their own issues instead of thinking about how to hurt us. The development of the Jordan Valley will help mark a permanent border, which will be to our strength in all future peace plans.

Keeping Jerusalem and Tel Aviv safe starts in the Jordan Valley; even Jordanian King Abdullah does not want a Palestinian state on his border.

Although he was 8 at the time, he firmly remembers the events of Black September in 1970, when his father King Hussein fought Yasser Arafat.

The peace agreement between Israel and Jordan is an asset for both. The Jordanians will not so quickly give up on the water, natural gas and intelligence Israel provides them. Their dependency on the U.S. as well is what allows us to have civil conversations with them.

Jordan knows Israel is a key component in the peace process, not an obstacle.

The only question that remains is whether the current unity government is brave enough to take control of the future and rule, or like all previous administrations of the past 20 years, fold and stick their heads in the sand to continue a pointless conflict.

Justice and right are on our side. The power and morality of the IDF allows us to seize the historical opportunity to end Hezbollah and Hamas' extortion and rid Israel of these threats.

Voices from parts of the Muslim world: The worst antisemites

There is a huge largely amorphous mass of news items about antisemitism and anti-Israelism. Google Alerts selects more than 3,000 antisemitic items per year. That is just one of my sources.

It would have been logical for the Israeli government to have set up an entity that sorted through this information, categorized it and separated out the most extreme items. Such an entity however doesn’t exist.

Yet there are shortcuts that help in gathering information about the most extreme incidents and expressions of antisemitism. Since 2010, the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) annually publishes a list of the Top 10 worst global antisemitic incidents worldwide. In some items more than one case was mentioned. Over a 10-year period the picture of who are the worst antisemites becomes clearer.

The most extreme antisemitic and anti-Israel hate-mongers come out of parts of the Muslim world. The remainder – however dangerous – lags substantially behind.

This is true even though right-wing antisemitism is currently growing. A prime figure in Muslim incitement is former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. In 2010, he made the SWC list for his statement: “Jews had always been a problem in European countries. They had to be confined to ghettos and periodically massacred... Even after the massacre by the Nazis of Germany, they survived to continue to be a source of even greater problems for the world.”

When going through the SWC’s annual lists, one realizes that the only calls listed for extermination of Israel or Jews come from clerics and other influential figures in the Muslim world. The following will illustrate this: In 2012 the cleric Futouh Abd Al-Nabi Mansour prayed at a nationally televised service at the Cairo el-Tenaim Mosque. It was attended by then-Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi. The cleric said: “Oh Allah, destroy the Jews and their supporters – oh Allah, disperse them and rend them asunder, oh Allah, demonstrate your might and greatness upon them.” Morsi can be seen saying amen.

In the same year, on August 5, then-chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Maj.-Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi said: “The Iranian nation is standing for its cause that is the full annihilation of Israel.”

Yusuf al-Qaradawi is considered the world’s leading Sunni cleric. In 2013 he did not call for the extermination of Jews but referred to it in a positive way, declaring: “Allah has imposed upon the Jews people who would punish them for their corruption. The last punishment was carried out by Adolf Hitler.”

Also in the same year, Iraqi cleric Qays bin Khalil al Kalbi said during a US visit: “Allah chose you to be the most wretched of all people. Allah chose you as the best to become pigs and apes.... Allah chose Hitler to kill you, so who is better, you or him?”

Furthermore in that year Saudi Iraqi cleric, lawyer and poet Muhammad al-Farraj broadcast the following poem: “Adolf Hitler had a blessed way of burning you oh rotten nation. If I were allowed to pray for a non-Muslim I would pray for the soul of the Nazi leader who barbecued you [the Russians] and the Jews throughout with gasoline.”

On November 18, 2014, two Muslim terrorists from east Jerusalem murdered four people in a Jerusalem synagogue as well as a heroic Israeli Druze policeman. The terrorists were killed. The next day, Jordanian parliamentarians held a moment of silence for the murderers and read Koran verses aloud – “to glorify their pure souls and the souls of all the martyrs in the Arab and Muslim nations.”

Then-Jordanian prime minister Abdullah Ensour sent a condolence letter to the families of the terrorists stating; “I ask God to envelop them with mercy and to grant you with patience, comfort and recovery from your grief.” The Jordanian government, on the other hand, issued a statement condemning the attack, adding that all acts of violence against civilians in Jerusalem must be denounced.

In 2015, a video purportedly produced by ISIS shows a knife-wielding Islamic State fighter standing near two masked gunmen. The narrator announces that the war against the Jews “will soon be launched, God willing... To all the Jews, grandsons of apes and pigs, we are coming at you from all over the world... [The war] is soon; it won’t be long, God willing, God willing.”

Another video released in Hebrew threatens, “Soon, there will not be even a single Jew left in Jerusalem or the rest of the country. We will keep going until we eradicate this disease worldwide.”

With the immigration of many Muslims to the US, exterminatory messages have also been broadcast there. In 2017, citing Islamic texts about the end of days, Imam Ammar Shahin of the Islamic Center in Davis, California, called from his pulpit: “Liberate al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews... annihilate them down to the very last one.”

In these 10 annual publications of the SWC there isn’t a single exterminatory text by non-Muslims. But the problem goes far beyond. It’s only leaders of a number of Muslim countries inciting to the extreme against Israel and the Jews. There are no such leaders of countries elsewhere. In addition, the Global ADL study found that 49% of Muslims are antisemites while 24% of Christians and 21% of secular people identify with these hate-filled sentiments.

What does Russia want with Lebanon’s gas fields?
Despite the modest signs for actual gas finds, Russia’s involvement in the Lebanese energy market spans much wider interests than natural gas – some of which directly concern Israel.
By ELAI RETTIG/SEMION POLINOV/SHAUL CHOREVL

A Russian search and rescue ship has accompanied the establishment of a new gas drilling rig off the coast of Beirut since March, an action that strengthens Russia’s economic and military involvement in the Lebanese energy market.

Why does Russia insist on taking part in natural-gas exploration among Israel’s neighboring countries, despite the modest promise of relatively small gas deposits? How does this move relate to the belief among President Vladamir Putin’s advisers regarding “Jewish power”? How should Israel respond to Russia?

In early 2018, the government of Lebanon issued two licenses for natural gas exploration in its territorial water to a consortium of three international energy companies: Italian ENI (40%), French TOTAL (40%) and Russian Novatek (20%).

The Lebanese tender should raise the level of awareness in Israel not only because it includes territory under dispute between Israel and Lebanon (“Block 9”), but also because of Russia’s direct involvement in the tender.

Through Novatek, a gas company owned by two Russian billionaires with direct ties to Putin, the Russian government added a military dimension to the project in recent months, when a Russian Navy search-and-rescue ship began accompanying the establishment of a new drilling rig in Lebanese water, 22 km. west of Beirut.

Officially, the Russian ship allows for geophysical mapping of Lebanese territorial water for gas exploration, yet its cruise route since arriving in the area does not match this purpose.

This raises the suspicion that Russia is using Lebanese gas exploration activities to introduce ships carrying monitoring equipment for maritime espionage of maritime movement, including of submarines, close to Israel and Cypriot waters.

This concern is strengthened by the fact that initial findings indicate only modest gas finds in the explored area (“Block 4”).

Despite the modest signs for actual gas finds, Russia’s involvement in the Lebanese energy market spans much wider interests than natural gas – some of which directly concern Israel.

Contrary to common conceptions, natural gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean do not pose a serious threat to Russian dominance in the European gas markets.

Russia exports approximately 200 Billion Cubic Meters (BCM) of natural gas each year to Europe.

Israel, on the other hand, has allocated between 350-450 BCM for export over the next 30 years – a quantity Russia exports in two years.

But while Israel’s gas is not a threat to Russia’s market share, in 2011 Russia still made considerable efforts to acquire sizable stakes in Israel’s Leviathan gas field and – having failed that – began gas exploration projects in Lebanon, Cyprus and Egypt.

RUSSIAN INTEREST in the gas reserves of Israel and its neighbors is driven by both economic and military interests.

Economically, Russia seeks to undercut any threat, large or small, to its markets in Europe, which make up most of its energy-related income.

This is coupled with the “energy superpower” doctrine, developed by Russia in the last decade when it became clear that Russia would not be able to diversify its economy away from an over-reliance on natural resource exports.

In this context, the rise of any new exporter in the global energy market, however small, undercuts Russia’s exclusivity.

Additionally, Russia’s perception of the Israeli gas market may be informed by a genuine perception – held by some prominent Russian senior officials – of the power of “global Judaism” and by their view of Israel’s gas project as part of a “global Jewish agenda,” especially following the involvement of a US energy company, Nobel Energy, in Israel’s gas exploration projects.

Russia’s interests in the gas fields are also tied to its navy’s expansion in the Eastern Mediterranean.

One of Russia’s geostrategic challenges is the fact that its fleet lacks free access to the Mediterranean Sea.

Its current access relies on passage through the Bosphorus straights controlled by Turkey, a NATO member, who could potentially disrupt the passage of Russian ships in wartime.

Russia’s gas exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean provide it with a legitimate reason to send Russian naval assets on patrol and scouting missions in the economic water of regional states, as well as to deploy them to defend gas platforms.

Such activities by the Russian Navy also grants it a certain degree of control in the region, and the ability to monitor the movement of other vessels – including those of the Israeli Navy.

This Russian strategy, executed in other areas in the post-Soviet region, can be termed a “crawling maritime annexation”: in the first stage, Russian naval ships merely accompany the new drilling platform in the economic waters of the state that issued the search permit.

Afterward, if a threat to the security of the platform suddenly develops, the Russian Navy presence becomes permanent.

Once the extraction of gas begins, and the host state becomes dependent on a Russian company for the provision of an important economic resource, it is only a short road to demanding homeporting by Russian battleships.

While Israel has managed to avoid such a scenario due to Nobel Energy’s refusal to allow Russian-based multinational Gazprom a share of the Leviathan gas field, it now seems to be materializing in Lebanon.

Israel cannot prevent Russia’s involvement in the Lebanese energy market, but it must pay closer attention to its maritime domain as Russia increases its presence in the region.

Israel should formulate a coherent maritime strategy concerning its economic waters, both in the Mediterranean and in the Red Sea, and complete domestic legislation regarding its economic waters (since Israel is not a party to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea).

Failing that, Israel could find itself responding to the actions of other powers in the region, such as Russian ships surrounding its navy and monitoring its actions; Chinese-owned maritime infrastructure; or unilateral declarations by Turkey or by the Palestinian Authority regarding their economic waters, as has happened in recent months.

Increased Israeli involvement at sea could include various actions, such as the development of surveillance which would enable initial detection of suspicious activities in Israel’s economic waters, as well as strengthening Israeli intelligence cooperation with regional actors that have similar interests of staving off competing powers from its seas, such as the EU, NATO, Cyprus and Greece, all while maintaining coordination with the US.

COVID-19 Has Become "Less Prevalent" And "Isn't Making People As Sick", UPMC Doctor Says

https://www.zerohedge.com/health/covid-19-has-become-less-prevalent-and-isnt-making-people-sick-upmc-doctor-says

As if the world needed another reason to be bullish after Friday's jobs number surprise, one doctor from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is doing his best to keep the rally going.

Dr. Donald Yealy, the chair of emergency medicine at UPMC, says that fewer people are testing positive for the virus and those who test positive don't seem to be getting as sick.

“All signs that we have available right now show that this virus is less prevalent than it was weeks ago,” he said, according to PennLive. "Among people who test positive, the total amount of the virus the patient has is much less than in the earlier stages of the pandemic.”

He also said the proportion of those needing a ventilator has fallen. “We see all of this as evidence that COVID-19 cases are less severe than when this first started,” the doctor said.

The doctor's sample set includes western and central Pennsylvania and other communities in New York and Maryland served by UPMC. 4% of UPMC's 30,000 coronavirus tests it has conducted have come back positive, he said. He also said UPMC has tested about 8,000 people who had no symptoms at all, of which about 20 tested positive.

He also said that fears about getting the virus from someone with no symptoms is unlikely.

“Your risk of getting into a car accident if you go back and forth across the turnpike in Pennsylvania is greater than your risk of being positive for asymptomatic COVID-19 infection. This should give you some reassurance that the risk of catching COVID-19 … from someone who doesn’t even know they have the infection, in our communities, is very small.”

The doctor attributes the fall in prevalence to the weather, potential genetic changes, better medical decisions and people minding their hygiene better.

Nearly half the Jewish sites in Syria have been ruined
The fate of most Iraqi sites is unknown

Nearly half the Jewish sites in Syria and a quarter of the sites in Iraq have been destroyed, according to a research project.

In Iraq, at least 68 out of 297 Jewish heritage sites have deteriorated to the point that they are beyond repair, the London-based Jewish Cultural Heritage Initiative said in its report, published earlier this week.

In Syria, at least 32 out of 71 such sites have crossed the point of no return, the report said.

The structures date from the second half of the first millennium BCE up to the present day. Most sites were built in the 19th or 20th centuries.

The condition of many sites is not known despite efforts by the research team. In Iraq, there is uncertainty about two-thirds of the sites. Only 11% of the 297 Iraqi sites are still standing. Of those, most are in poor or very bad condition.

In Syria, the fate of only 8% of Jewish sites is unclear, but 45% of them have been destroyed.

Those that remain have fared better than the Iraqi ones, with most kept in fair condition, according to the report.

Among the most endangered structures are the Bandara Synagogue in Aleppo, Syria, and the Synagogue of the Prophet Elijah in Damascus, the researchers found.

In Iraq, the bulk of the destruction happened during the second half of the 20th century as a result of neglect, reuse for different purposes — shops, auto repair, etc. — and destruction for redevelopment in the aftermath of the emigration of the Jewish community and the seizure of Jewish property, Michael Mail, the chief executive of the Foundation for Jewish Heritage, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

“Jewish heritage in Mosul was affected by the battle to liberate the city from ISIS, but was already in advanced decay prior to the group’s seizure of the city in 2014,” he said.

Mail said the Shrine of the Prophet Ezekiel in al-Kifl is now the Shiite Al-Nukhailah mosque. Hebrew inscriptions and other traces of the Jewish nature of the shrine remain in the room that houses the tomb of Ezekiel, he said.

In Syria, the rate of deterioration and destruction has increased in the past few decades, “although violence and seizure of Jewish property happened earlier,” Mail added, including “heavy damage to the Bandara Synagogue in Aleppo during anti-Jewish riots in 1947.”

Synagogues there are in the best condition among Jewish heritage sites.

The Synagogue of the Prophet Elijah in Jobar, a suburb of Damascus, has been “largely destroyed” and the condition and location of its archive are unclear as a consequence of the Syrian civil war, Mail said.

Baghdad alone had more than 120,000 Jews before a series of pogroms and persecutions caused them to leave.

ENTIRE emergency response team of Buffalo Police Department resigns over suspension of cops who pushed elderly protester

https://www.rt.com/usa/490987-buffalo-riot-police-unit-resign/

All 57 members of the Buffalo Police Department’s Emergency Response Team have quit their unit in protest after two officers were suspended without pay over their unprovoked attack on an elderly peaceful protester.

The officers resigned from their positions en masse on Friday after their colleagues were suspended without pay the previous night as a “show of support and disgust,” local media reported. They have not quit the police department entirely, however.

The Erie County District Attorney is investigating an incident – caught on video – in which two members of the Emergency Response Team pushed a 75-year-old demonstrator to the ground in the process of clearing the area in front of the Buffalo City Hall. While they initially claimed the man fell, video later emerged showing the men shoving him without apparent provocation.

Victim Martin Gugino, reportedly a long-time activist well known in the community, is hospitalized and said to be in serious but stable condition.

Erie County executive Mark Poloncarz said he was “exceptionally disappointed” about the spate of resignations, as “it indicates to me that they did not see anything wrong” with the officer’s actions. The mayor of Buffalo, Byron Brown, meanwhile, said the city had “contingency plans” in place to maintain police services while the matter is sorted out.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has called for the Buffalo police chief to fire the two officers involved in the incident, calling it “fundamentally offensive and frightening.”

The police union has defended the two officers’ actions, claiming they were merely following orders to clear the square for curfew. While it has pledged to pay for those officers’ legal defense, the union announced on Friday that it would no longer cover legal fees going forward for other police officers involved in the ongoing protests against police brutality - an announcement likely linked to the 57 officers’ decision to step down from the riot control team.

The mass resignation was greeted with jeers on social media.

Only 2 of the 59 cops in that Buffalo riot unit were ‘bad apples.’ The other 57 just thought there should be no consequences for a senior citizen getting his skull cracked open. The good news is that this can all easily be fixed with more rules and some sensitivity training. https://t.co/obtfiZ4qNO

The 3rd Amendment gets its moment? DC mayor clashes with Trump & GOP governors over National Guard quartering
5 Jun, 2020 17:03
https://www.rt.com/usa/490949-bowser-evicts-military-third-amendment/

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has ordered the National Guard and other federal troops to leave her city – setting up an unexpected clash over the rarely-invoked Third Amendment barring the quartering of troops.

After declaring an end to the District of Columbia’s state of emergency, Bowser posted a letter to President Donald Trump ordering the removal of “all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence” from the city on Friday.

I request that @realDonaldTrump withdraw all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence from our city. pic.twitter.com/AvaJfQ0mxP
— Mayor Muriel Bowser #StayHomeDC (@MayorBowser) June 5, 2020

Citing concern over “unidentified federal personnel patrolling the streets of Washington DC,” Bowser lamented that the military presence was “inflaming demonstrators and adding to the grievances” of protesters she insisted had been largely peaceful.

Pointing to the lack of arrests by the Metropolitan Police Department the night before, Bowser explained the city was able to handle “large demonstrations and First Amendment activities” without the assistance of 10 states’ National Guard troops. She added that the federal and out-of-state troops’ refusal to wear “identifying insignia” was contributing to “confusion and concern,” suggesting that the visiting troops were responsible for much of the “conflict between police and citizens.”

Bowser also condemned the use of military helicopters to disperse protesters after one was used earlier this week in a warlike maneuver to terrorize a small group on the streets.

Not everyone was thrilled with the idea of kicking the National Guard out of the nation’s capital, however. Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) called the move to evict more than 1,200 troops from city hotels “unacceptable” in a late-night tweet on Thursday, having gotten wind of Bowser’s order before it was made public.

Just heard that Mayor Bowser is kicking the Utah National Guard out of all DC hotels tomorrow. More than 1200 troops from 10 states are being evicted. This is unacceptable. 1/2
— Mike Lee (@SenMikeLee) June 5, 2020

But Lee was flooded with messages highlighting the Third Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects Americans from being forced to quarter troops in their homes.

Bowser had hinted on Thursday that her government was looking for a legal way to evict the National Guard troops sent by Utah – as well as Ohio, South Carolina, Indiana, New Jersey, Maryland, and Tennessee – noting that while Trump had called them up, the District didn’t want them.

The crew of a National Guard UH-72 Lakota helicopter has been grounded after footage was captured of the chopper flying just 50 feet above protesters in Washington, DC - low enough to knock people over and snap tree limbs.

US Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy told reporters on Friday that the crew of a National Guard helicopter had been grounded pending the outcome of a 15-6 investigation into an incident in Washington, DC, earlier this week. He said he could not disclose further information about the chain of command above the crew, due to the nature of the probe.

After the 7 p.m. curfew came and went on Monday, thousands of protesters across the nation's capital were driven from the streets by a bevy of city and federal police, as well as units of the city's National Guard and guardsmen from other states. In one incident captured by multiple reporters and onlookers, helicopters descended below rooftop level to hover just yards above protesters' heads in an effort to intimidate them into leaving.

At least two incidents were reported: one on Judiciary Square, next to several courthouses, and another in Chinatown, and onlookers noted both UH-72 Lakota and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were involved. However, McCarthy reportedly only mentioned the Lakota crew.

BDS petition blames Israel for US police brutality

A petition being circulated at the University of California (UC) has suggested that Israel is to be blamed for teaching methods to American police forces that were used and resulted in the death of George Floyd, according to the Algemeiner.

The petition was circulated online and signed by hundreds of organizations and individuals from schools within the UC system, which included among other demands for abolishing US police forces and returning “all Indigenous lands” to Native Americans.

“This complicity goes beyond domestic policing. We also call on the UC to divest from companies that profit off of Israel’s illegal military occupation of Palestine, investments that uphold a system of anti-Black racism in the US,” the petition said, connecting the universities to Israel.

It added that "we know the Minneapolis police were also trained by Israeli counter-terrorism officers. The knee-to-neck choke-hold that Chauvin used to murder George Floyd has been used and perfected to torture Palestinians by Israeli occupation forces through 72 years of ethnic cleansing and dispossession.

Police departments view Israeli Defense Force tactics as models for responding to ‘public health and safety crises.’"

The second demand listed in the petition is that the UC “Divest from companies that profit off Israel’s colonial occupation of Palestine.”

In response to the claim of a connection between Israeli training and the Minneapolis police force, a spokesperson from the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest told Algemeiner that “Any attempt to create any link between what took place in Minnesota with Israel is baseless and misguided.”

Executive director of the independent pro-Israel group Academic Engagement Network Professor Miriam Elman also criticized the petition, saying that "like past efforts to blame Israel for US policing problems and police violence, the petition has absolutely no basis in fact. It defies belief to suggest that Israel was responsible for the killing of George Floyd because, according to the signatories, back in 2012 some Minneapolis police officers attended an FBI-hosted counter-terror seminar where a few Israeli law enforcement officials were invited to speak."

She added that "the notion that this training program, or similar police exchanges sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League and other American Jewish organizations, cause or contribute to police shootings by American cops on the beat is ludicrous.

It smacks of antisemitic tropes and canards related to Jewish power, money, and influence that have sustained anti-Jewish hatred across the millenia.”

“This petition basically states that if you care about Black Lives Matter, racial and social justice, and the need for police reform, then you must also revile Israel and detest its supporters, who stand accused of complicity in the suffering of blacks, Latinos, Native Americans and other minority communities,” she continued.

“Scapegoating American Jews for societal ills is one of the hallmarks of antisemtic discourse. University of California campus leaders must not hesitate to speak out forcefully and unequivocally against it.”

Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, director of the AMCHA Initiative watchdog organization, which seeks to combat antisemitism on American campuses, said to Algemeiner that “It is truly sad that at a time when we should be coming together and uniting against hate and bigotry, some are exploiting this tragic moment and using it as a vehicle to promote anti-Israel divisiveness and hate. Sadly, this happens on campus all too often.

She noted that the petition is part of a "deliberate effort directed by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel to have anti-Israel student and faculty activists use every opportunity to align themselves with meaningful causes while ostracizing and suppressing Jewish students and pro-Israel voices. And faculty, who should know better, are playing a more prominent role than ever.”

“The dozens of faculty members who signed this petition should be ashamed of themselves, particularly Jeanelle Hope, who was paid by the California Department of Education to develop an ethnic studies model curriculum for our state’s high schools.

With faculty who do not hesitate to use every opportunity to promote their narrow, radical and hate-filled agenda, it is no wonder that the first draft of that ethnic studies model curriculum resembled a partisan playbook filled with political propaganda — including the promotion of BDS — and not an educational curriculum,” she continued.

The petition originally surfaced Monday as a post on the DisarmUC Facebook page, which describes itself as “a movement, a collective, which seeks to disarm campus police across University of California campuses.”

Turkey’s relation with Syrian proxies tainted by broken promises
“Turkey lied to us,” openly claim Syrian fighters interviewed by The Investigative Journal reporter Lindsey Snell, who researched the role played by the Syrian armed factions in Libya.

Although Turkey parades its incursion in Libya as a successful military operation and a demonstration of Turkish military might, sources reveal the ugly underside of this bright picture: Turkey fails to keep promises given to its Syrian proxies, leading to mass defections in their ranks.

Success story?

Last April, forces of Libyan National Army led by Khalifa Hafter launched an assault on Tripoli, the capital of the Government of National Accord, the Libyan National Army’s rival in the struggle for power over the country. Faced with the looming threat of defeat, Government of National Accord Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj pleaded for military help with Turkey, one of his few allies in the region. Ankara was quick to respond: Turkish intelligence agents were sent into the country, military advisers were attached to Government of National Accord units and Turkey-made drones provided air cover.

These measures, most importantly air support, allowed the Government of National Accord to reverse the tide avoid a military defeat. The Libyan National Army offensive stalled and the conflict turned into a prolonged stand-off. The Turkish authorities regard these developments as confirmation of Turkey’s foreign policy moving into the right direction, if not total victory.

Some observers were so impressed with Turkey’s intervention in Libya that they deemed it possible to use it to justify controversial outcome of Turkish involvement in the Syrian conflict.

“What’s happening in Libya today is proof that a direct Turkish military support for the Syrian opposition early in the Syrian war could have defeated Assad and his allies years ago,” claimed Turkish analyst Ragip Soylu.

Yet the “success story” of the Turkish operation in Libya would not be complete without an important detail: besides military advisers and drones, Government of National Accord units are supported by at least 9,000 fighters of Turkey-affiliated armed opposition groups sent in from Syria.

Turkey had no difficulty recruiting those willing to go to Libya among the members of the so-called Syrian National Army. Promises of a hefty $2,000 a month on average in addition to Turkish citizenship and compensation for families of deceased fighters proved to be perfect bait for the militants, who are paid just $100 a month in Syria.

Soon it turned out that not all of these promises were made to be kept. Stories told by disillusioned Syrian mercenaries who were tricked by their employer paint a picture that is starkly different from the rhetoric presented by Turkish officials.

Promises broken

“Turkey lied to us,” openly claim Syrian fighters interviewed by The Investigative Journal reporter Lindsey Snell, who researched the role played by the Syrian armed factions in the Turkish operation in Libya. The investigation, based on interviews with multiple witnesses produced by Snell, established that none of the promises were kept by Turkey in full.

The militants were indeed given the promised $2,000 or even more but only for the first month they spent in Libya. The second month some received a considerably smaller reward while others got nothing. Many regarded this as permission to start looting the areas held by the Government of National Accord, said Zein Ahmad, a fighter of Ahrar Al-Sharqiya group.

The promises of granting Turkish citizenship were a lie as well.

“Now that so many Syrians have died in Libya, we know this is also a lie,” says Ahmad, who was able to return to Syria only due to a bribe to his commander. He now plans to leave Ahrar Al-Sharqiya.

Loyalty lost

Zein is not alone in his decision. Sources in Sultan Murad Brigade, another Turkey-affiliated faction that sent fighters to Libya, disclosed that around 2,000 members of the group defected over the past few weeks.

Late in April, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on mass defections in Sultan Murad, estimating the total number of defectors at 700 fighters. Sources among the militants later indicated that the real number was much higher.

Early in May, opposition media outlets revealed that a total of seven units left Sultan Murad. The units’ commanders were named as Adnan Khuwaylid, Arraba Idris, Abu Bilal Hanish, Abu Khaled Al-Saqa, Abu Muhannad Al-Hur, Muhammad Barakat and Fadi Al-Deiri. These units comprise over 2,000 men – almost half of what Sultan Murad has.

The reason for the defections was a conflict between the commanders and the leader of Sultan Murad Fahem Issa, who demanded that they dispatch men to Libya – or quit. They chose the latter and took their men and weaponry from the positions in Aleppo and Hasaka provinces.

Like Ahrar Al Sharqiya, Sultan Murad Brigade is considered to be one of the most loyal Turkish proxies. Made up of Syrian Turkmen, the group was in the vanguard of forces that participated in Euphrates Shield, Olive Branch and Peace Spring Turkish military operations in Northern Syria.

However, they earned their reputation not in battle but rather during the looting that followed.

Sultan Murad was among the first groups to send fighters to Libya as well. The first Syrian fighter killed on Libyan soil came from Sultan Murad: a native of Eastern Ghouta Ahmad Mullah died in clashes with the Libyan National Army south of Tripoli in the beginning of January.

Sources say that despite its close ties with the Turkish intelligence and the “special” status of the group, Sultan Murad fighters are increasingly frustrated with what they perceive as inadequate support coming from Turkey. Members of the group share the same concerns as Zein Ahmad: they also did not receive the compensation promised by the Turkish authorities that served as the key incentive to fight in Libya. “Fight” is more of a general term here, as many fighters were promised that they would be tasked with maintaining security at oil facilities far from the front line.

These expectations went down the drain the moment the fighters lured by lucrative pay landed in Libya: they had their first fights and first casualties.

Casualties covered up

Both Sultan Murad Brigade and Ahrar Al-Sharqiya, as well as other units of the Syrian National Army, made no secret of the losses sustained in Syria. Social media accounts of the Syrian National Army factions regularly post messages offering condolences to relatives and friends of the fighters declared martyrs for dying in battle in Syria. In Libya, this modus operandi was subjected to drastic changes.

Members of the Turkey-backed factions witness that they lost hundreds of fighters in Libya. The militants bewail the lack of weapons and training blaming their key backer for the dismal situation.

Although the first Syrian fighters arrived in Libya as early as last December and have been sustaining heavy casualties ever since, not a single mention of it can be found on social media accounts of the factions fighting in Libya. It’s difficult to find an adequate explanation for such sudden secrecy of the militants and their backers aside from the intent to cover up the true scale of casualties.

Dim perspectives

Under these strained circumstances, many fighters are willing to follow the example of Zein Ahmad and bribe their commanders to return to Syria, but the Turkish authorities make no haste. Some of the mercenaries have been fighting in Libya for more than six months without any clear perspective of return date: another sign that it has become increasingly difficult for Turkey to find those willing to travel to Libya, even among its most loyal proxies.

Furthermore, mass defections from the ranks of Sultan Murad show that the Turkish leadership not only faces serious challenges in executing its ambitious plans of entrenching in Libya but also loses its grip on the Syrian opposition. The more Turkey gets involved in Libya, the less likely that it will be able to write a story of success.

In first, classified Israeli missile hits 400km target range
LORA weapons system, a theater quasi-ballistic missile, was developed by the Israel Aerospace Industries and has been tested two months ago at sea to tryout its effectiveness in naval warfare

Israel said on Tuesday it has successfully tested a new weapons system that contains a missile capable of hitting 400 km (249 miles) target range, an unprecedented feat for the country's aerospace industries.

LORA weapon system, a theater quasi-ballistic missile, was developed by Israel's Aerospace Industries and has been tested last month on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea in order to see its effectiveness in naval warfare.

LORA is a container-based surface-to-surface missile. A standard shipping container houses four missiles, which are controlled by an operator working from a command and fire control section located in another container.

This operator can control four container launchers at once, for a total of 16 of the missiles. The LORA can be stored in a container for up to 7 years without maintenance.

The missile is a deceptive one that could hide in plain sight on a commercial freight ship. If undetected, it could launch up to 16 missiles before being located.

No modifications to the ship are required once the weapons system is loaded on. In addition to offensive missiles, cargo ships can be equipped with canisterized and/or concealed anti-ship missiles and guns, as well as air and missile defense interceptors and sensors - making them asymmetric and concealable warships.

If equipped with concealed weapon systems, cargo ships could easily slip behind enemy lines and conduct disruptive asymmetric military operations.

"We have successfully tested the LORA weapons system's various strategic capabilities, both: short range of 90km (56 miles) and long range of 400km (249 miles)," said a statement by IAI. "In both scenarios, it hit the target within a margin error of fewer than 10 meters."

LORA has been in operation for nearly two decades and is considered to be a strategic weapon for foreign powers, some of which opted to purchase it.

A rare glimpse of the system was recorded in 2018, during a military exercise of the Azerbaijani military and during a joint parade with the Russian Army, overseen by President Vladimir Putin.

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev was seen in 2018 inspecting the weapons system during a visit to a military base, where he attended the inauguration of a new missile unit in the Azeri army.

The consequence of annexation
Opinion: If the annexation of the West Bank does indeed come to pass, it will surely cost us economically, internationally, and morally - and even if there were no price to pay for this measure, it is blatantly anti-Zionist
Amos Yadlin |
Published: 06.04.20 , 21:45

There is widespread public consensus in Israel that the West Bank settlements blocs and the region westwards of the security fence will transfer to Israeli control, and that security in the Jordan Valley will remain in the hands of the IDF.

All this will come to pass, but in a future arrangement and not through the annexation plan currently being touted, whose timing is exceedingly poor and which will negatively affect Israel’s national security.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems to believe that the window of opportunity presented by having a friend in the White House may close in six months.

This is why he is in such a hurry to present the Knesset with a plan to annex 30 percent of the West Bank, in accordance with U.S. President Donald Trump’s Mideast peace plan.

By going through with such a move, Netanyahu is making two mistakes.

Firstly, he will harm the important fight to stop Iran's nuclear progress, and secondly, he will put Israel at security, political, strategic, economic and moral risk.

The Trump administration is busy dealing with the coronavirus crisis, the inter-superpower confrontation with China and the wave of riots throughout the country, leaving the administration with little time to spare for the Middle East.

Therefore, it is important that in our discussions with the Americans, we focus on the Iranian nuclear program.

Iran continues to accumulate enriched materials, operate advanced centrifuges, and shorten the timetable until it passes the nuclear threshold from a year to only six months.

International support is key to stopping Iran’s progress, as is the open and confidential cooperation with the Arab world against it.

However, the move to annex parts of the West Bank will serve to shift the international community’s focus from Iran to Israel, encourage wall-to-wall criticism and throttle normalization and cooperation efforts with the pragmatic and anti-Iranian Sunni world, all while jeopardizing long-standing peace agreements.

Declarative unilateral annexation does not provide Israel with any strategic benefit, only risks and costs.

Israel has succeeded in convincing its friends around the globe that its hold on the West Bank is the result of Palestinian refusal to accept any and all peace plans, and a necessity due to security considerations.

Annexation, though, will put Israel in the shoes of the one that refuses peace.

Furthermore, there is no security justification for such a move.

The Jordan Valley today is under complete IDF control, with the 417th Regional Brigade defending the eastern border in close and inspiring cooperation with the Jordanian army.

The process of annexation will not improve Israel’s security situation, but will surely make it worse - given the damage it will inflict on Jordan, as well as the peace treaty and military and security cooperation between the two countries.

It will most likely also spark riots and acts of terrorism in the West Bank, cause incitement in Gaza, and divert the IDF’s attention from threats on the northern front and Iran to threats in the West Bank.

Politically, there is no country in the world - excluding Trump’s United States - that will accept the annexation and recognize its borders.

For the country that is in the midst of a battle to harness the world to fight the Iranian nuclear threat and the precision-missile system in Lebanon, it makes no sense to shift the gaze of Europe, Russia and China to the West Bank.

In economic terms, the European Union - Israel's main trading partner - is threatening to rethink relations. China is no alternative to the EU , because increasing economic relations would also increase tensions with the United States.

In addition, the map of Trump’s "deal of the century" paints a very long border for Israel, one of some 16,800 km (10,439 miles). Fencing such a lengthy frontier would cost at least NIS 160 billion.

And finally, in the fight against Iran, Israel has the moral high ground. The Iranians constantly threaten Israel's existence, ensuring the support of the international community when it comes to self-defense.

On the Palestinian issue, however, the world sees the two-state solution as the more ethical solution and significant annexation in the West Bank will put Israel in the position of a rogue state.

And in any event, even if there were no costs for the annexation process, such a move is blatantly anti-Zionist and will prevent the possibility of future separation from the Palestinians while safeguarding Israel as a Jewish, democratic, secure and moral state.
