'Political motive behind Syria abductions'

Syrian lawmaker Mohammad Habash sees attempts to impair Tehran-Damascus alliance as the motive behind abduction of several Iranian engineers in the country's restive city of Homs.
The leader of the “Third Movement” opposition party said on Friday that those responsible for the kidnappings of the Iranian nationals seek to pressure the Syrian government, and terrify Iranians of their alliance with Syria.
"I don't think such a thing could bring their (abductors') illusions into reality, and harm Iran-Syria coalition," Habash stressed.
He also stated that Tehran-Damascus strategic alliance seeks to satisfy the interests of the two Muslim nations, support Damascus-based Islamic resistance movements, and thwart plots devised by the Tel Aviv regime against both states.
He further blamed armed criminals and outlaws for the ongoing chaos in Syria's central city of Homs.
"There are many armed groups there who have criminal thoughts and resort to criminal methods to achieve their goals," Habash pointed out.
The Syrian legislator also called on Homs officials to employ all available means and secure the release of abducted Iranian nationals.
Five Iranian electrical engineers, who were on their way to work, were abducted at 6:30 a.m. local time (0430 GMT) on December 21 after a group of unknown gunmen attacked their convoy in Homs.
Iran's Embassy in Damascus in a statement called on the Syrian government to take immediate action for the release of the kidnapped engineers and identify the abductors.
The Syrian city of Homs has been the scene of unrest since mid-March.
The Syrian government insists that foreign-backed outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence in the country.
In addition, Syrian state TV has broadcast reports showing seized weapon caches and confessions by terrorist elements, describing how they obtained arms from foreign sources.
