The Syrian crisis must be settled without referring to outside forces, Mikhail Margelov, head of the Russian Federation Council's International Affairs Committee, said after his talks with Syrian human rights activists and opposition officials in Moscow on Friday. High on the agenda was finding the ways to halt the bloodshed in Syria. In this connection, President Bashar Assad's opponents are pinning special hopes on Moscow, which they say could act as a mediator in resolving the Syrian standoff.

Prominent rights activist Ammar Kurabi was at the helm of Syrian delegation, which included a Kurdish representative, in a sign that Russia keeps in touch with a wide spectrum of political forces in Syria and does not exclude contributing to talks between Syrian authorities and the opposition, according to Mikhail Margelov.

"We are sure that the Syrian people alone is able to solve a host of problems Syrian society is now dealing with, Margelov says, warning against meddling in Syria's internal affairs. Russia, for its part, is interested in an early resolution of the political crisis in Syria," he adds.

He was echoed by Ammar Kurabi, who touted the opposition's dialogue with the authorities as an "effective and important mechanism" to resolve conflicts. He added that the past few decades have seen a confidence crisis between the opposition and Syrian authorities, which he said prevents the sides from sitting at the table.

"We have friendly ties with Russia, whose role is of paramount importance to the region. The Moscow talks reflected our common stance on a string of issues," Kurabi says.

The anti-government protests in Syria have been showing no sign of abating since mid-March. The opposition demands the resignation of President Assad and a slew of political reforms. Asad, for his part, pledged amendments to the Constitution and the holding of reforms. Meanwhile, more than 2,000 people have been killed in Syria over the past six months, the UN says. The United States and the European Union also urged Assad to step down in a move that was followed by their slapping economic sanctions on Syria.

Russia has repeatedly warned against interfering in Syria's domestic affairs, in what was echoed by President Dmitry Medvedev in an interview with the Euronews TV channel aired earlier this month. He urged the West not to idealize the situation in Syria, which he said is far from being clear-cut. Those chanting anti-government slogans include even extremists and terrorists, Medvedev said, stressing the necessity of considering balance of forces and interests.

Russia also urges the UN Security Council against imposing sanctions against Syria, which Moscow fears is fraught with the escalation of conflict.

On Friday, Mikhail Margelov, who is also the Russian President's special envoy to Africa, said that he does not ruled out a visit by Russian lawmakers to Syria in the near future in order to assess the situation on the spot. In a separate development, Monday will see the meeting between Margelov and representatives of the Syrian government.

Russia is sending a parliamentary mission to Syria.

A statement to this effect was made by presidential envoy to Africa and Chairman of the parliamentary International Relations Committee Mikhail Margelov following talks with Syrian opposition leaders in Moscow.

Russia is bitter about the continuing violence in Syria and is ready to do its utmost to produce a political solution to the crisis at an early date, Margelov said.

Moscow considers the Libyan scenario in Syria unacceptable, stands for negotiated settlement of the crisis and is sure that it's up to Syrian people to resolve it.
