Hama, Central Syria, (SANA) - Tareq Ward, a blind young man since 1988, has determined to continue life despite his disability inspired by the Chinese proverb "it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness" and Saadallah Wannous' "we are doomed by hope".

The young man is a graduate of Arabic Literature Department at the Faculty of Arts, Damascus University, after the success and excellence he demonstrated at the school for the disabled, and he is now working as a teacher of the religious education subject.

At graduation from school, Tareq was awarded with an Arabic language-speaking program which would allow him to easily deal with various programs and browse the internet effectively.

He was later admitted to the first year of the Master's Program at University, but he could not continue due to financial reasons. He now intends to take the high school examination again to be able to study philosophy at university.

In a statement to SANA, Tareq said that he used to spend hours sitting in front of his computer which includes more than 18,000 books on different areas of knowledge.

Tareq can play chess, ride his bike and give Arabic language learning courses for students as any health person enjoying life.

Tareq has proved himself as an ambitious person who refuses to bow to difficulties. He didn't want his disability to stand in his way, so he tried to cope up with his situation and began the journey for a new future.

"Having taken my loss of sight for granted, I came to a conviction that it's useless to deny the reality. It'd be better to accept it and live with it," said Tareq."

He continued, "I started from this point to head toward a future which I can feel satisfied about as far as I believe that I am a human and that I have full right to live with dignity without me needing to wait for help from any one. Rather, I have to think that I can go for a future where I can realize at least a little bit of what I aspire to achieve, and where I can serve my society."

Tareq talked about his two-year experience in Damascus, away from his family who had to go back to their home village, where he learned how to adapt to life changes and fulfill his needs by his own.

Tareq, as well as many blind people, was able to overcome his disability through his insight and start life inspired by hope in a better future.
