Turkey's textile exports outpaced pre-crisis numbers this year, and sector experts said next year is expected to be a "golden age" for the ready-to-wear and textile industries.
"Turkey's ready-to-wear industry was slightly behind pre-crisis export size. However, our textile industry had a successful year and exceeded 2008 numbers. It has become the first industry to outpace pre-crisis export numbers," Emre Kızılgüneşler, head of the Aegean Ready-to-Wear and Clothing Exporters' Assembly said in a recent interview.
Exports in Turkey's ready-to-wear and clothing industry, one of the driving engines of country's export industries, amounted to $15.7 billion in 2008. It dropped by 15.5 percent to $13.2 billion a year later. In 2010, it is expected to bounce back by around 13 percent and reach $15 billion. In the meantime, exports in Turkey's textile industry rose by 19 percent to $7 billion.
Kızılgüneşler said the European market had recently shifted from Chinese manufacturers to Turkish textiles and clothing producers as they had troubles with suppliers from Far East countries.
The apparel industry's share in Turkey's total exports rose to 13.1 percent in 2010, from 11.9 percent a year earlier.
Kızılgüneşler also pointed out the foreign exchange policy followed by the Central Bank to maintain the competitive power of Turkish firms. "Turkey will see a brighter year in 2011 if this policy continues. In other words, if the Central Bank continues to cut interest rates and foreign exchange rates rise to their real values, 2011 will be a golden age for our industries," he said.
"I cannot speak for the whole country's economy, but I can say the global economic crisis was tangential to Turkey's textiles and clothing industries."
