Gold acquisition was the most preferred saving method in Turkey this year, according to a recent survey.
The 2010 results of a MasterIndex research project showed that gold acquisition is the most popular form of saving, followed by hiding money under a mattress and depositing Turkish Liras in a bank account.
MasterIndex is an annual research project conducted by MasterCard examining credit card usage and the spending and saving habits of the Turkish community. The research is conducted among a total of 11 cities, representing Turkey's urban population.
According to the survey, 13 percent of Turkish people saved money by buying gold this year, the highest percentage the commodity has enjoyed since 1998 when the survey was conducted.
Among those surveyed, 22 percent of people who only invested this year chose gold.
Turks' second preferred method of saving money was to keep it in their houses, with 21 percent of respondents assaying this is how they saved. Third came lira deposits, with 14 percent of respondents reporting that this is how they saved. Saving foreign currency in the home took 9 percent of respondents while buying investment funds, acquiring immovables, acquiring equity shares and repurchase agreements and keeping the money in an overseas bank were other methods used to save.
Regarding the saving habits across gender, the survey shows that women's first choice is to buy gold, while men prefer to hide their liras under their mattresses.
A third of respondents, over the age of 65, keep their savings in their houses rather than bank accounts. The survey shows that different age groups generally have different preferences for saving. People aged between 35 and 44 are the most active savers, with 49 percent of respondents from that age group saying they actively save.
According to the MasterIndex results, the rate of people evaluating investments in foreign currency is decreasing each year. Throughout Turkey, the proportion of people with bank accounts or savings in foreign currency in their homes is only 10 percent.
This figure increases to 17 percent when only considering the population that invests.
Respondents younger than the age of 35 save in foreign currency more than twice as much people aged between 35 and 54, the survey found.
With 60 percent of people in the Black Sea region actively saving, it is the wealthiest region in the country – as far as saving is concerned. Black Sea region Turks are the most populous in all saving methods practiced in Turkey.
Central Anatolia region residents lead gold acquisition, representing 17 percent of the commodity's buyers, while 23 percent of those who choose to save their liras under their mattresses live in the Marmara region.
