Trowers & Hamlins, the UK and Dubai-based law firm, on Thursday said it had filed a $720m foreign exchange claim against Ahmad Hamad Algosaibi and Brothers (AHAB), a prominent Saudi business that is locked in a bitter multibillion-dollar dispute with a rival company.

The claim was filed with the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (Sama), the kingdom's central bank, and relates to money AHAB owes The International Banking Corporation (TIBC), a Bahrain-based bank the Saudi company owns.

Trowers & Hamlins, which was appointed TIBC's administrator after the bank defaulted on some of its bank debt last summer, said the claim formed part of a wider asset realisation programme being implemented on behalf of Bahrain's central bank and in the interests of TIBC's creditors.

TIBC owes international and local banks about $2.6bn. AHAB is TIBC's biggest debtor, owing it $3.2bn, Trowers & Hamlins said.

TIBC is at the centre of a year-long feud between AHAB and Saad Group, another high-profile Saudi company. Bankers estimate the two companies owe more than 100 international and regional banks about $20bn.

Saad Group is owned by Maan al-Sanea, the Saudi billionaire who rose to international prominence after he acquired a 3 per cent stake in HSBC in 2007.

AHAB has accused Mr Sanea of "massive fraud" which it alleges could amount to $10bn and the dispute has triggered court cases, with claims filed in New York, London and the Cayman Islands.

Mr Sanea has dismissed the fraud allegations as "groundless, false and prejudicial".

The two companies are linked because Mr Sanea is married to a member of the Algosaibi family and previously worked at AHAB.

Trowers & Hamlins said it had also filed an application in New York to obtain a court order "compelling the disclosure of key financial information which the administrator has been requesting from AHAB since August 2009 and which has not been forthcoming". Abdullah Mutawi, a partner at Trowers & Hamlins, said: "The claim we have launched with (Sama) follows unsatisfactory responses from AHAB and their representatives to questions relating to the assets of TIBC."

Jim Courtovich, an adviser to AHAB, said the Saudi company had only seen the press release distributed by Trowers & Hamlins and that AHAB "rejects their claims on every level".

The administrator said it had also recently filed cases in Saudi Arabia against Saad Trading, part of Saad Group, and Abdulaziz al Sanea, one of Mr Sanea's brothers, for defaults on loans advanced by TIBC.

Saad Group declined to comment.
