CAIRO, (SANA) – The extraordinary ministerial meeting of the Arab League was concluded on Saturday night at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo to discuss the current Arab situation including the developments in Libya and Syria.

Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil al-Arabi, was commissioned to head to Damascus to discuss with Syrian officials the consultations of the meeting.

Syria's permanent representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Youssef Ahmad, reviewed during the meeting the reality of the events in Syria and the circumstances and foreign interference and pressure which are clearly targeting Syria's stability and security.

Ambassador Ahmad said since the crisis started in Syria last March, the Syrian leadership considered it as popular protests that reflect the demands of citizens to provide a wider range of basic freedoms and improve the economic and social conditions.

He added that the Syrian leadership responded to those popular demands through a series of procedures and laws to improve the living conditions and start a national dialogue.

The Syrian Ambassador said that the response of the Syrian leadership to the popular demands has contributed to stopping the popular protests in several cities; however, a suspicious activity by some outlaws of known political and religious backgrounds started in some Syrian cities.

He noted that the armed terrorist groups were and still are receiving foreign directions to stir the feelings of the public opinion locally and abroad, pointing out that the number of the army and security forces victims is 600 martyrs and 2,000 wounded so far.

Ambassador Ahmad refuted the allegations which targeted the honorable national role of the Syrian Arab army, stressing that the military units, which protected the security of citizens and restored stability in cities and areas which witnessed some unrest, were already situated near those cities because they were border areas.

He emphasized that Syria is proceeding with reform and fulfilling the legitimate demands of citizens and the national duty of protecting their security, adding that Syria will not allow terrorism and extremism to undermine coexistence and independence of national decision-making

He criticized media channels which ignored the fact that Syria is a unique situation with its internal structure and regional and international dimensions, adding that the majority of the Syrian people know well the backgrounds of such provocative media and that Syria will never be a place for conflict among its people or an area for foreign interference.

The Syrian Ambassador considered it strange that some Arab and regional sides issued statements of "advice" to the Syrian leadership at a time which coincides with an increase of international and US pressure.

He said that Syria would accept advice and experiences from friendly countries which are truly concerned over stability and security of Syria and have a practical and constitutional experience in the field of basic public freedoms.

He said that the image is now clear for all and that the problem is now in specifying the choice between dealing with these events with a mentality and a background which deliberately ignore the facts and the repercussions which will affect the Arab national at large, and dealing with these events with wisdom and putting aside the agendas which others are trying to impose on Syria.
