Russian journalist’s view on drama in Syria

UN experts are expected to unveil a new report on Syria during the UNSC behind-closed-doors talks next week. Russia’s envoy to the UN Vitaly Churkin has addressed Damascus to allow UN representatives and media into Syria.

Journalists are expected to provide an objective coverage of the drama in Syria. The country's Charge d'Affaires in Russia Suleiman Abu Diyab accused the foreign media of distorting facts. Al Jazeera is facing much of the criticism for being the first to announce that civilians and opposition supporters were being killed in Hama last week. Anastasia Popova, a reporter for RossiyaTV channel, has become the first Russian journalist to visit Syria since the unrest broke out there five months ago. Anastasia shared her impressions in the interview with the VOR:

"Indeed, Syria has suffered quite a lot of damage, mainly in the area of police stations and government buildings. Traces of bullets can be seen with the naked eye. Many windows are broken, some buildings are partially burnt. Police cars were also destroyed. Pieces of police clothing can be seen in some areas, which proves that police were among the rebels' main targets. Other buildings, including mosque, did not suffer any damages at all."

Anastasia also told us what she learnt during talks with Syrians. Her experience can be of great help to UNSC experts as they are working on their report:

"People are a bit reserved, they are afraid of talking directly on camera, especially in Hama. First, they ask where we come from, fearing we are from Al Jazeera- they do not like Al Jazeera and western television. When they surf the Internet, they see how information is being distorted there. They say, very often they see factual mistakes concerning names of streets and even towns. That is why journalists are not always welcome guests there. People are also worried about possible consequences of their cooperation with mass media. They are afraid of possible revenge from rebels in case the latter find out that there are people who support the president and reforms."

Some Arabic experts say Syria has become an epicenter of tough psychological war unleashed by the US. Lebanese political analyst Faysal Abd el - Sater thinks that the recent announcement made by Egypt's Foreign Minister MohamedKamel Amr was ‘orchestrated’ from Washington. Actually, the minister made an ultimatum- either reforms in Syria or foreign interference:

"Egypt has made an unprecedented announcement on Syria (though similar remarks were previously made by Sheikh al-Azhar andsecretary general of the Arab League , Nabil Al Araby). Egypt’s decision to change its political course may result from a kind of an agreement with the US, especially following the decision of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to recall their envoys from Syria. It appears to be a response to Syria's strong resistance to armed groups and success made by Damascus in regaining control of the situation across the country."

Mr. Hussein Nasrullah, Chief editor for Al-Mutauasset, Moscow-based Russo-Arabic magazine, told the VOR that he did not rule out that Washington stands behind the decision of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain to recall their envoys from Syria.
