Syria: a million demonstrators. Really?

Syria knows the socio-political unrest for several weeks. The major media report these events by stating that it is a popular uprising similar to those occurring in Tunisia or Egypt. To confirm their statements, they are events that take place throughout the country who suffer from a ferocious repression. For example, in the city considered one of the main centers of protest, Hama, there were 500,000 protesters on Friday in the streets of the town of ... 530,000 people (counting the surrounding villages).

Their only source of political opponents are based outside the country. Physical evidence? Blurred photos which can be distinguished from the crowds of a few dozen men. The defense of journalists deal with these professional flaws? The press could not enter the country and the internet would be cut. Or is the testimony of Peter Piccinin, a Belgian researcher currently on site: it says this dispatch from the one million demonstrators *.

NB Again, this is not to defend a regime that does not apply the Western political model of democracy, nor to deny the presence of a challenge, but to show the dishonesty of professional Western journalists responsible, consciously or not, convey the propaganda of Western governments not friends with the current Syrian regime.

Testimonial:

I am currently in Syria last week, in preparation for three sections of MACO (1), which will be consecrated in September, the "Arab Spring" and an article in Les Cahiers de l'Orient (2) to be published in December. La Libre Belgique also published a post summarizing my comments in recent days (3). Friday, I left Damascus, the capital and went to Hama, a stronghold of the Islamist revolt, to Homs.

The data from this news agency, reflected by a number of media, are completely wrong and probably deliberately exaggerated (I have traveled in all sensitive areas of the country, but never prevented me get where I wanted).

In Deraa, the challenge is almost extinct and, apart from one district or another, which still occasionally show a few hundred people for an hour or two without even the army to intervene, everything is very quiet.

In Damascus, only a few thousand (not even "tens" of thousands) of protesters came out on Friday, with scattered groups in several neighborhoods of the periphery.

Same in Homs, where armed gangs have caused the police (already Thursday evening I had been informed of the risks of disorders in Homs, Thursday, and had gotten there, the center was quiet, I took the first truck carrying military that I met and fell in the scuffle, which was between a few dozen protesters wearing masks against a squad of soldiers, they opened fire and forced me to leave).

I spent all afternoon on Friday in Hama. This is the only city where the dispute remains a real scale (the only city where you can not find a single portrait of Bashar al-Assad, also ubiquitous, except for the facade of the building where the headquarters of Baath Party, which are entrenched members of the security) people have fortified the entrances to the city to prevent the army to intervene and appear in tens of thousands.

Hama is the only place where I could take photographs in large numbers (also, the police being present during the unrest, I can not get out my camera).

When I walked in Hama, I was immediately chased by groups of youths on motorcycles who arrested me. I showed my passport and the Belgian situation has eased, they escorted me everywhere and given access to a building height from which I could take pictures of the whole event, centered on the square Alasi Avenue and al-Alamhein.

As the only foreign observer on the spot, they gave me all the necessary facilities and held a guard over my car while I was moving on foot among the demonstrators.

Despite the sympathy I may have for the kindness with which I was received in Hama, it must be admitted that the number of protesters did not exceed certainly not 100,000 people, shouting loudly, contrary to what AFP claiming that Hama has seen the biggest event in the country, involving 500,000 people.

It is of course difficult to estimate. However, it is true that this was the largest event in the country, however, I can say if I attempt a more precise estimate, the number of demonstrators must have been 15,000 to 30,000 people at most.

I produced a more detailed analysis of the situation on my blog (4), where I also published photographs of the event, that support unquestionably information.

Thus, the "million" of demonstrators across Syria does in fact only a few tens of thousands.

I could have access to Euronews: images provided by the opposition and bloggers speak for themselves; close-ups, which give an impression of mass, while in fact, the parades are relatively scarce.

The number of those killed, it is obviously impossible to verify seriously, but my contacts in Damascus and Homs not confirm anything like me. In Hama, the tanks remained outside of the city and no shots were fired and no death is regrettable, and no arrest.

The situation in Syria, Hama excepted, is fully under the control of the government and the general climate (except Hama, whose streets are littered with barricades and rubble of the first battle) is not revolutionary.
