Jordanian prime minister has declared his country's support for the Syrian government's efforts to restore calm after weeks of unrest, a report says.

Maaruf al-Bakhit said on Wednesday that his government is “confident of the wisdom of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad” in containing the wave of protests in a way that “preserves the interests and well-being of Syria.”

Bakhit, in a phone conversation with his Syrian counterpart, Adel Safar, said that he hopes that peace and calm will be restored in the country, AFP quoted the official Petra news agency as saying.

Bakhit also stressed Jordan's commitment to stability in neighboring Syria. He said that Amman supports the economic and political reforms announced by the Syrian president.

Since the beginning of demonstrations in Syria in mid-March, hundreds, including members of state security forces, have been killed and many others wounded.

The opposition blames the government for the violence, but Damascus insists armed gangs and foreign elements are responsible for the killings.

Last month, Damascus lifted an emergency law that had been in place for nearly five decades.

AMMAN (Petra) - Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit on Wednesday telephoned his Syrian counterpart Adel Safar and discussed means to boost relations between Jordan and Syria.

During the telephone conversation, the premier stressed Jordan's concern about Syria's stability, expressing hope that calm will be restored in the Kingdom's northern neighbour.

He also underscored Jordan's confidence in the ability of the Syrian leadership to handle ongoing protests in the country in the best interest of Syria and its people.

Safar expressed appreciation of Jordan's concern about the security and the stability of Syria, commending the continued cooperation between the two countries to develop bilateral relations.

The Syrian prime minister pointed out that his government is committed to implementing the economic and political reform programme that President Bashar Asaad announced recently.
