Damascus, (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad discussed here Tuesday with the visiting Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry, Mustapha Mohamed, economic and commercial relations between Syria and Malaysia and the role of the Joint Syrian-Malaysian Committee (JSMC) in boosting these relations through the implementation of bilateral signed agreements.

The talks also touched upon the role of the JSMC in increasing volume of trade exchanges and investments between Syria and Malaysia opening new horizons for bilateral cooperation.

The ongoing international economic developments and ways of bolstering cooperation among the region countries and the countries of East and South East Asia were also reviewed, citing Syria's desire to strengthen its cooperation with the countries of East and South East Asia, especially with Malaysia given its big political and economic importance, and as to make benefit by the experiences of these countries, particularly Malaysia as far as technical and economic fields.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Economy and Trade, Lamia Assi, and the Malaysian Ambassador to Damascus.

In a statement to SANA, the Malaysian minister said President al-Assad stressed the importance of carrying out all the decisions made during the Syrian-Malaysian trade committee meeting.

He added that President al-Assad expressed interest in discussing the economic modules applied in Malaysia which led to huge economic growth, pointing out that the meeting focused on increasing the private sector investment.

Minister Mohamed noted the role of the Syrian-Malaysian Trade Council in executing joint projects to increase trade and investment opportunities in Malaysia and Syria.

He also pointed out to the importance of starting direct flights between the two countries in improving the relationship between the two sides.

Syria and Malaysia are linked by agreements and memos of understanding in the fields of encouraging and protecting bilateral investments and air services, developing small and medium-sized projects, information technology, banking, energy and transport.

Damascus, (SANA)- Prime Minister Mohammed Naji Otri discussed on Wednesday with Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry, Mustapha Mohamed, the growing cooperation and friendship relations between Syria and Malaysia and the joint desire for enhancing these relations and exploring new spheres.

Prospects of joint cooperation in the economic domain, increasing the volume of trade exchange and facilitating the flow of goods into the markets of the two countries, as well as activating the role of the businessmen in establishing development and investment projects and economic partnerships were on the table.

Otri welcomed the participation of the Malaysian companies in carrying out development projects in Syria.

Later, Otri discussed with German Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, Peter Ramsauer, cooperation between Syria and Germany and ways of boosting them in the economic, trade, scientific and cultural fields.

Talks also dealt with means of cooperation in different areas of transportation and the facilities, infrastructure and service projects.

Ihe Premier briefed the German side on the outcome of the economic reform process in Syria and what have been achieved on the level of increasing growth and the gross domestic product (GDP), achieving self-sufficiency and food security and developing the investment environment.

He stressed Syria's keenness on achieving just and comprehensive peace in the region based on the international legitimacy resolutions, the land-for-peace principle and the return of the occupied Syrian Golan.

For his part, Ramsauer expressed his country's desire to develop cooperation with Syria in various domains, hailing Syria's role in achieving security and stability in the region.

Later, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Abdullah al-Dardari, reviewed with Mohamed prospects of developing cooperation between the two countries and means of broadening them to include different sectors including, trade, economy, industry and development in addition to establishing joint projects, linking industry with creativity and exchanging expertise and technologies.

Al-Dardari underlined the importance of activating the signed agreements between the two countries in addition to signing new agreements to boost bilateral cooperation, calling on Malaysian businessmen and companies to invest in Syria.

He pointed out to the facilitations provided by the government to investors and the richness and diversity of Syrian investment map.

For his part, Minister of Transport, Yarub Badr, discussed with Mohamed means of encouraging the establishment of investment projects in both countries and starting direct flights due their importance in boosting trade and economic relations.

He added that the Ministry is preparing for constructing a new passenger hall at Damascus International Airport, calling for Malaysian companies to participate in the project.

Later on, Minister of Housing and Construction, Omar Ghalawanji, discussed with Mohamed possibilities of boosting cooperation in the sectors of sanitation, desalination and construction through facilitating investment and establishing Syrian-Malaysian companies.

He added that negotiations with the Malaysian side are on to sign a new contract that includes providing service to a million people in Damascus Countryside through establishing sewage treatment projects with an estimated cost of SYP 4 billions (USD1 Equals SYP46).Cooperation with Malaysia and Germany Discussed in Various Areas



Syrian-Malaysian Joint Commercial Committee focuses on developing economic, commercial and investment cooperation

Damascus, (SANA) – The Syrian-Malaysian Joint Commercial Committee convened on Tuesday in Damascus, chaired by Syrian Minister of Economy and Trade Lamia Assi and Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed.

The meeting focused on means for developing economic, commercial and investment cooperation between the two countries and overcoming obstacles hindering it.

Assi affirmed the importance of the Committee's meeting during the current economic conditions, noting that the exchange of official visits between the two countries in recent years paved the way for developing relations.

Assi asserted the important role of Syrian and Malaysian businessmen in promoting bilateral cooperation and establishing investment projects. She also underlined the various documents signed during the Committee's previous meeting, saying that establishing a joint bank will facilitate the work of businessmen and boost economic and commercial cooperation.

The Minister called for establishing marine transport lines between the two countries, calling on Malaysian businessmen to benefit from investment opportunities in Syria and its relations and location.

For his part, Mohamed pointed out that the members of the Malaysian delegation participating in the meeting represent many sectors and companies, which reflects the Malaysian government's commitment to developing relations with Syria.

He reviewed the developments in Syrian economy which provide an enticing investment environment, stressing the need to work to boost trade exchange, which currently amounts to USD 200 million.

Mohamed expressed interest in establishing a preferential trade agreement and a free trade zone agreement between the two countries, lauding the procedures and facilitations provided by the Syrian investors, concluding by calling on Malaysian businessmen to establish investment projects in Syria and vice versa.

After the meetings, the two Ministers signed the minutes. The two sides also signed a memo of understanding on exchanging expertise and training programs on export promotion and development.

The Syrian-Malaysian Business Council is due to be laucned on Wednesday, a step which aims at encouraging Syrian and Malaysian businessmen to participate actively in developing and improving economic, commercial and investment cooperation.

Syria and Malaysia signed several documents on mutual encouragement and protection of investment, aerials services, small and medium-sized projects, technology, information, banking, energy and transport.
