Lattakia, Syrian Coast (SANA)_ The Ministry of Agriculture works on developing silkworm breeding through establishing specialized centers and guidance fields in several provinces due to the economic, agricultural and industrial revenues, and the job opportunities this worm provides.
Silkworms feed on the leaves of mulberry trees which yield huge crops of leaves as they are considered the only resource of food for silkworms, and they are mainly planted in the coastal countryside.
The climatic conditions in the coastal province of Lattakia are very suitable for sericulture in spring, summer and autumn starting from May to November as the leaves of mulberry are available over all of this period, in addition to various species of Japanese and Indian mulberry.
Each dunum of land produces 10 tons of mulberry leaves after three years of being planted which are enough for breeding 10 egg boxes annually.
Director of Lattakia Agriculture Department Hassan Baddour said that the number of silkworm breeders in 2010 reached 28 who bred 41 boxes of silkworm eggs, adding that the production of the Province for the same year reached 900 kgs of silk.
Baddour indicated that the Ministry of Agriculture has taken several measures to preserve silkworms and to increase their production through establishing a number of specialized centers.
He added that the number of silkworm eggs' boxes doubled in 2010 in comparison with 2009, expecting that the number of breeders will considerably increase due to the support provided to them by the Ministry of Agriculture.
He pointed out that the Department provides the boxes of silkworm eggs with low price that doesn't exceed USD 8 for each egg box, adding that the boxes are exported from Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Each box of silkworm eggs produces 7kgs of pure silk and 40 kgs of cocoons.
