AMMAN - Syrian market accounted for 32 per cent of Jordanian vegetable exports during the first six months of this year, followed by Iraq with around 30 per cent, official data showed.

According to figures of the Ministry of Agriculture made available to The Jordan Times, a total of 147,851 tonnes of vegetables were exported to Syria during the first half of this year, 11 per cent higher than the 132,587 tonnes exported to the neighbouring country in the same period of last year.

Tomato topped the list with 64,920 tonnes followed by eggplant and cucumber, the ministry's report revealed.

Iraq imported a total of 137,722 tonnes of vegetables from the Kingdom in the first half of this year with tomato also representing over 75 per cent of its overall agricultural imports from Jordan.

Overall quantities of local vegetable exports during the first six months of 2010 increased by 9 per cent reaching 466,425 tonnes compared to 424,917 tonnes exported during the same period of last year, according to the report, which showed that local vegetables reached the markets of 38 regional and European countries.

Vegetable exports to European markets increased from 21,894 tonnes during the first half of 2009 to 28,789 tonnes with countries, such as Azerbaijan, Moldavia, Kosovo and Croatia, emerging as new markets for Jordanian agricultural produce.

In terms of fruit exports during the first half of this year, the figures showed a 32 per cent rise over the same period of last year to a total of 44,640 tonnes from 30,848 tonnes, with watermelon and peach ranking as the most popular fruits.

Agriculture Minister Saeed Masri attributed the rise in fruit and vegetable exports to an increase in sizes of irrigated areas and green house farms in the country, indicating that the number of green houses in the Jordan Valley went up from 50, 000 in 2009 to 63,000 during this year.

The official pointed to a rise in the quantities and value of exports to European markets, indicating that the value of exports to European countries is higher than that to neighbouring markets.

Masri said the value of vegetable exports increased by 18 per cent during the first five months of this year reaching JD165 million compared to the same period of 2009, noting that the ministry is working to remove all obstacles facing fruit and vegetable exports.

"We look forward for higher figures of vegetable exports when Saudi authorities allow our vegetables to enter their markets, which will be soon," he stated, adding the ministry is still waiting a response in this regard from the Saudi side.

Saudi Arabia stopped importing vegetables from Jordan over the past few years after setting new criteria related to the quality of irrigation resources, preferring irrigation to be from freshwater and not from treated wastewater, an issue authorities in Jordan have solved, according to officials.
